Elias Rooney

Elias Rooney studied ‘cello in Belfast with Barbara Upritchard and Scott Heron before winning a scholarship to study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Whilst studying at the Belfast School of Music he held the position of principal ‘cellist of the City of Belfast Youth Orchestra. He first played with the Ulster Youth Orchestra at the age of just 13. Since 2009, Elias has worked regularly with the Ireland String Quartet as well as the MELO String quartet which he founded with three close friends. MELO have proven themselves to be one of the most successful young string quartets in the North of Ireland playing before HRH Prince Charles and appearing with Ronan Keating and Camilla Kerslake at BBC Children in Need 2010. He enjoyed touring Ireland in a production of The Musician by Conor Mitchell with Cahoots Theatre Company in late 2009. He has toured to various different locations such as Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy and Slovenia. Elias looks forward to establishing himself within the next few years playing a wide variety of music including traditional Irish and jazz as well as classical.
